Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatuLlah wa barakaatuh.
Trust that you're good, striving and thriving.
This time, I would love to hear from you (in the comments)How are you starting Ramadan?
“He is the One Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.”
~ Surah Al-Mulk, Verse 2
I am starting with this verse; that is relevant to my yearly Ramadan question.' ‘Should I focus on quantity or quality? Should I strive to do more or better? Or should I do both?
This question comes up a lot for other people as well. The thing is,I am not here to tell you what to do, but will share parts of my journey, that I hope you find useful. Let’s get into, shall we?
I started my Ramadan planning with a review of last year; I really was interested in what worked and what did not. Subhanallah! Last year, was something! It was also the year I decided to change my approach to Ramadan.
Some things caught my interest though, especially when I expanded the review outside Ramadan and went deeper on the things I started but did not finish. Then I rounded it up with a review of my classes, and even homework.
Before I forget, I bugged my teachers too (Please make Dua for them). Their ability to answer my questions with such patience and compassion is admirable.
It took some time but it was worth it brought forth habits, struggles and prospects’ and when I was done, I had my answer. I knew exactly what I needed to do.
I knew that this Ramadan, I will not be rushing onto the ‘next big thing’. I will instead strive to ‘perfect’ my deeds.
I did not need a brand new schedule for Ramadan, I needed to instead adjust and improve the one I created ages ago.
I did not need to start yet another Qur'an habit, I needed to improve the one I currently had.
I did not need to find new Dhikr, I needed to be consistent with the routine I had abandoned.
We should be concerned about the quality of our deeds. We should be concerned about our intentions for starting them, our consistency and how we finish them. If we had a presentation with the most important person in the world, I know we will put our BEST foot forward. What more when we are presenting to the creator of ALL that exists?
We can’t go with deeds that are shabby, half-baked or just boxes that we ticked off a checklist.
We must come correct. We must come with our best deeds.
This Ramadan, ask yourself how you are starting and ending every single deed you do? Are you presenting them in their best form or are you just rushing through them?
I think you have an answer.
May Allah (SWT) help us to present the best of deeds to Him always.
