Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatuLlah wa barakaatuh,
Trust that you are doing great, striving and thriving.
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, one who does not hold anything from the Quran in his heart is like a ruined house.
Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2913, Grade: Sahih
Listening to Shaykh Abdul Nasir Jangda explain this Hadith during his Friday Khutbah struck something in me. He likened ‘the house’ referred to in this Hadith as ‘a haunted house’ and that was definitely scary thought. It all made the sense though because the question really is,
‘If we do not fill our hearts with Qur'an, what do we fill it with?’
Do you fill it with content that is beneficial or detrimental? Is it filled with content that will bring you closer to Allah or that will take you further away? Do you fill it with light or darkness? These are the questions you should reflect on. I love that Shaykh explained how easy Allah made the Qur'an for us and the many rewards that each recitation comes with on earth and in the hereafter. So don’t you wonder what is stopping you?
If you do not have a relationship with the Qur'an, what do you have a relationship with?
This of course is not to make you worry, it is instead to make you reflect and be honest with yourself. Take a sheet of paper and record your activities from when your rise to when you go to bed. What are the things you spend the most time on? How do you spend your free time? Track your activities and find where the gaps are but most importantly, make time for the Qur'an. Make the Qur'an your company here on earth, so it can keep you company in the grave.
I love that Shaykh also encouraged us not to be intimated or feel overwhelmed by the idea of memorizing the entire Qur'an but to instead focus on the Short Surahs and then build from there. The passion with which he delivered the Khutbah did leave me feeling like I was definitely missing out on a ton of Barakah, you could tell he wanted the audience to benefit from this blessing that is often taken for granted.
May Allah bless him and keep him steadfast on this path.
